Consecration Sunday - delivered by Rev. Chris Owens

Four Barriers

Scripture lesson: Matthew 9:9-13

Key verse: Matthew 9:13 [Jesus said,] "Now go and learn the meaning of this Scripture: 'I want you to show mercy,

not offer sacrifices.' For I have come to call not those who think they are righteous,

but those who know they are sinners." Matthew 9:13

How should Christians view things like the Navy Yard shootings?
Christians view them in different ways.
We can stand on three truths:

  • 1. We live in a fallen world.
  • 2. When and how we die is not nearly as important as how we stand with God when it happens.
  • 3. God is love.
Four barriers that stop Christians from sharing the good news of Jesus:

Barrier #1

  •   The lie: “Some people are too sinful for God to forgive.”
  •   The truth: Nobody is beyond God’s grace.

Barrier #2

  • The lie: “People aren’t interested in the gospel, nobody will respond.”
  • The truth: People crave hope, acceptance and love.

Barrier #3

  • The lie: “I’m not trained, I’ll probably do more harm than good.”
  • The truth: People who know you will listen to your story.

Barrier #4

  • The lie: “Nobody will respond, I’ll look stupid.”
  • The truth:

It’s not about how you look, it’s about offering Jesus.

If you don’t gather the harvest, you’ll plant a seed.

If you have been praying for them, God has been preparing them.
